Lin Chuan laughed, "I’m flying a kite."
"Flying a kite?"
Li Tong looked at the enigmatic Lin Chuan in amazement.
Qin Yun also frowned at Lin Chuan, his face full of doubt. How did Lin Chuan know that Morgan and Baisheng, these two groups, had cooperated?
"I’ve sent the kite to Southeast Asia," said Lin Chuan with a smile as he glanced at Li Tong and Qin Yun.
Li Tong suddenly realized.
But the frown between her eyebrows deepened.
Sending the kite to Southeast Asia meant there was an informant there.
But how could Lin Chuan, whose main job was web novel writer, have an informant?
After a moment of thought, Li Tong asked with confusion, "How can your line reach Southeast Asia?"
"That’s a military secret."
Lin Chuan played coy and did not elaborate.
Some things didn’t need to be spelled out too clearly.
Li Tong opened her mouth as if to speak, then stopped herself. But she was already itching to know where exactly Lin Chuan got his informant from, one that could get insider information about the cooperation between the Morgan and Baisheng groups.
Qin Yun watched Lin Chuan.
Lin Chuan appeared calm and unaffected as if it were a trivial matter of great significance.
"Why are you all looking at me like that?" Lin Chuan countered.
Li Tong pursed her lips, "Like looking at a monster."
Lin Chuan touched his nose, "I’m a decent person, not some monster in disguise! Officer Qin, take a look."
As he spoke,
Lin Chuan lifted his arm out.
Since Qin Yun was sitting next to Lin Chuan, she immediately reached out to pinch, her eyes brightening, "Oh wow, there are muscles!"
Li Tong gave Qin Yun a reproachful look, "Not serious at all."
"There really are muscles!"
Qin Yun said seriously.
Li Tong couldn’t help but smile wryly.
Lin Chuan also laughed and brought the topic back around, "Sister Li, we should start handing over the resources we have, right?"
Li Tong gathered her thoughts and took a deep breath.
Then, forcing a smile, she said, "Yes, team leader."
"Team leader!"
Qin Yun also laughed heartily.
Unseen, the relationships between the three had grown a little bit closer.
Qin Yun closed the door.
The three of them gathered together properly, cleared the desk, and Qin Yun pulled out a work tablet and also handed a notebook to Li Tong.
With one hand holding a pen and the other pressing on the notebook, Li Tong’s gaze turned to Lin Chuan and Qin Yun.
"Let’s use code names," said Lin Chuan.
They were about to start the handover of the undercover agents and informants in Li Tong’s hands.
Li Tong nodded her head and said, "I primarily have four undercover agents."
She wrote down four code names—ABCD—on the notebook.
Lin Chuan nodded slightly, indicating for her to continue.
Li Tong glanced at Lin Chuan and went on, "Among them, A and B are at a subsidiary of the Morgan Group. A is a technical staff member, while B is at another company, responsible mainly for the cybersecurity department. This falls within your expertise."
Lin Chuan raised an eyebrow but remained silent.
"C and D were dispatched not long ago and have not yet penetrated the inner workings of the Baisheng Group. They are still detached, working with some external companies that have dealings with Baisheng," Li Tong said with a solemn face.
Qin Yun and Li Tong worked on the same operational line.
To prevent the possibility of losing contact with any police officer suddenly, they tried to avoid single-line contacts with the undercover agents and informants.
At this moment, Qin Yun added, "If we had another month, we might have the chance to infiltrate the inner workings of Baisheng Group, at least allowing C to enter a subsidiary."
Li Tong agreed with this approach, "In our plan, we aim to use one or two months to get C and D into a subsidiary. Then we will secure our position firmly within the subsidiary over half a year, achieving results within one to three years, and create a supportive momentum to enter the inner workings of the group. That way, we’ll be able to grasp more inside information."
"What about after that?"
Lin Chuan blinked and asked with a smile.
"Following that..."
Li Tong paused slightly and shook her head, "Our current goal is only to get inside the group. As for what comes after, we haven’t made any plans yet."
Lin Chuan spoke with a tinge of regret, "Every criminal group internally has numerous factions and entangled interests, with countless eyes watching. If there isn’t a follow-up plan, or if the plan isn’t meticulous enough, it’s easy to reveal flaws and get discovered, setting off a chain reaction."
"We know that," Li Tong nodded, "But at the moment, we don’t know much about the internals of Baisheng Group, so we can only proceed cautiously and have only planned for the next three years."
"Have you ever thought of pushing them up to a higher level?" Lin Chuan looked steadily at Li Tong.
Li Tong’s eyes sharpened, "Push them to a higher level?"
"Team leader, are you suggesting pushing them into the leadership?" Qin Yun’s expression also changed, and she asked in surprise.
"Of course!"
Lin Chuan nodded slightly and pointed at C and D, "You’ve dealt with criminals from these criminal groups before, haven’t you?"
"Of course," Li Tong and Qin Yun both nodded in agreement.
"Have you ever put yourselves in their shoes?" Lin Chuan continued to ask.
Put themselves in their shoes?
Both pondered for a moment.
After some thought, Qin Yun responded, "Maybe not enough."
Lin Chuan then turned to Li Tong, "Sister Li, you’ve been undercover, you’ve had more contact, how well have you been able to put yourself in their shoes?"
Li Tong thought for a long time before saying, "Putting myself in their shoes, I truly became a ’addictive drugs’ manufacturer, experiencing it firsthand. The feeling is indescribable, just like ’everyone knows whether the water they drink is cold or warm,’ it’s hard for me to tell you the temperature of the water I drank."
Immediately,
Her tone shifted.
"However, I can feel that these criminals’ pursuit of profit is boundless. For that, they will stop at nothing, trampling the law is just part of their daily routine."
After listening, Lin Chuan nodded solemnly.
His gaze swept over the two of them, "What Sister Li said is correct, but as undercover agents, you need to pay more attention to yourselves."
"Hmm?"
Both looked at Lin Chuan, full of confusion.
In their minds, as a qualified undercover agent, they should observe as much information as possible and then feed it back to the police. That’s more beneficial for the police to formulate targeted actions.
Therefore, the first priority should be to observe more.
Now, why did Lin Chuan say they needed to pay more attention to themselves?
"As International Police, you actually find it very difficult to put yourselves in the criminals’ shoes," Lin Chuan said with a smile, "because your sense of justice and correct values make it impossible to understand their actions."
Li Tong and Qin Yun could not deny this.
Many times,
The actions of criminals are clearly not the best solution, but they stubbornly choose the worst one, until they head towards destruction.
This was something they could not understand.
"As a web novel writer, you can put yourself in their shoes, right?" Li Tong asked.
Lin Chuan replied with a serious face, "Of course!"
"Please enlighten us!"
Li Tong said earnestly.
Qin Yun did the same.
At this moment, the two International Police felt as if they had returned to the classrooms of the past, listening to a professor lecturing.
’Professor Lin’ cleared his throat with a smile, "I’m just sharing with you so you can understand more and carry out your work in the future, there’s no need for this formal approach."
Both chuckled awkwardly.
Back to the main topic.
Lin Chuan continued, "If you really put yourselves in the shoes of criminals, especially those who struggle and fight within large criminal organizations, you’ll understand that there is something supporting them."
"What is it?"
Li Tong’s eyes widened.
Lin Chuan slowly uttered a term, "Ambition."
Both of them had a chilling expression.
Lin Chuan then explained, "It’s not difficult to see that ambition is something that exists in everyone. However, it becomes more concrete and intensified in criminals, and what they pursue is breaking the norm; they achieve it by going against the rules of the game, which you can understand as laws, morals, etc."
Li Tong and Qin Yun furrowed their brows, half understanding.
Lin Chuan found it a bit tiresome to explain, took a sip of water, and continued, "This is their atmosphere, or you can consider it their attribute. So, look back at the point I just made."
—— As an undercover agent, you need to pay more attention to yourself.
Li Tong was the first to catch on, "I think I’m starting to understand!"
Qin Yun was still contemplative and then looked toward Li Tong.
Lin Chuan gestured for Li Tong to share her thoughts.
Li Tong pondered for a moment, "As undercover agents, you need to pay more attention to yourselves. That is to say, they need to have their own ambitions. An undercover agent without ambition in a criminal organization is a major flaw!"
Lin Chuan nodded in approval, "Exactly right. When undercover in a criminal organization, you must show your ambition. It’s okay to appear carefree and content with just getting by on the surface, but you must let others know about your hidden ambitions."
Qin Yun then joined the conversation, "So, that’s the key to being undercover."
"Of course," Lin Chuan responded affirmatively, "How can you succeed as undercover if you don’t want to be at the top?"
Li Tong and Qin Yun’s mouths twitched.
Wow!
Others aim to become the second in command when undercover and are already signaling to wrap things up.
And here you are, wanting to take the top spot?
Isn’t that ambition a bit too much?
——
The night-time garden in the residential area seemed gently covered by a soft and mysterious veil, revealing a sense of tranquillity and warmth vastly different from the daytime. The moonlight, pure and bright, filtered through the sparse clouds, casting mottled light and shadows, giving every inch of land a faint silver glow.
Along the path, the various flowers, though they lost the brilliance of the daylight, told stories of quiet beauty in another form. Night-blooming jasmine quietly unfurled, releasing wafts of its delicate scent, mingling with the occasional insect chirps from afar, creating a melodious nocturne, delighting the senses. The shrubs in the flower beds swayed gently in the breeze, as if whispering, telling secrets unknown to man.
Dotted with lights, the street lamps cast a soft and warm glow, creating a play of light and shadow on the paths, adding touches of coziness and romance. The lights intertwined with the moonlight, forming dreamlike scenes, compelling one to slow their pace and immerse themselves in this peace and beauty.
Occasionally, a cat’s cry pierced the night sky, or a night bird skimmed over the treetops, leaving behind a series of crisp calls, making the nighttime garden seem lively and vibrant. These subtle sounds contrasted sharply with the surrounding quietness, yet perfectly blended into the harmonious night.
