Chapter 50 Lin Chuan, I’m worried you might run away
“Sister Mingyue, you’re teasing me again!”
Youyou’s delicate face blushed slightly, like a peach blossom in early bloom, her long eyelashes quivered gently as she smiled and spoke.
To her surprise, Mingyue replied with a serious face, “I’m offering you a very serious suggestion.”
“Ah?”
Youyou was startled.
Mingyue tapped Youyou’s forehead, “You’ve been an editor for years, yet you’ve never grasped the essence.”
“What essence?” Youyou frowned.
“Think about it, what kind of relationship do you have with Lin Chuan right now?” Mingyue asked.
Youyou thought for a moment, “The typical editor-author relationship.”
“Exactly, how do you expect to keep him that way?” Mingyue looked at Youyou and continued, “With Lin Chuan being such a talented and treasured author who has made it onto the trending searches twice, not only will the police try to snatch him up, but other novel websites will also offer a lot of money to poach him. When that happens, what advantage do you have?”
Advantage... none.
Youyou pursed her lips, “Then, what should I do?”
“Seduce him, that’s your advantage!” Mingyue winked and chuckled.
“As an editor, I shouldn’t have to put myself on the line, right?” Youyou quirked the corner of her mouth and asked.
Mingyue, speaking from experience, laughed and said, “This seduction strategy doesn’t mean you have to invest yourself into it, but rather, you need to establish a kind of bond with your author.”
“A bond?”
Youyou pondered thoughtfully.
Mingyue, as the chief editor of Sailing Novel with rich experience, began to share her insights with Youyou, “You’ve mentioned Lin Chuan’s situation before, single, renting, freshly graduated, at an age full of vigor, alone in a small room writing. How could he not feel lonely?”
“So, what should I do?” Youyou asked.
“Of course, you need to show concern for him regularly, whether in his life or creative work. Play games with him occasionally; it’s the fastest way to build a bond,” Mingyue explained.
“Doing that often could seem a bit flirtatious, couldn’t it?” Youyou hesitated somewhat.
“Don’t think of it in terms of a romantic relationship. Think of the author as your friend. You support his career, take care of his life, and in turn, he enhances your performance. It’s more like mutually benefiting and advancing together as partners,” Mingyue said with a smile.
These were Mingyue’s words of wisdom.
She had once used this method to cultivate a platinum-level author—Qing Feng.
Now, that platinum author was not only her partner but also her other half.
Cough!
As for being a methodologist, Mingyue really did invest herself!
Youyou nodded with a new understanding, “I get it now.”
“By the way, there’s a little piece of gossip I want to share with you,” Mingyue said, raising an eyebrow.
“What gossip?”
“In April or May, the Anti-Fraud Center will join with Sunshine Film and Television to collect ‘anti-fraud’ themed novels and scripts from across the entire network. The rewards are very generous. See if anyone under you can write about fraud; they could give it a try,” Mingyue mentioned.
“Anti-fraud?”
Youyou slightly furrowed her brows and murmured to herself.
Mingyue nodded, hinting with another sentence, “After losing the top spot on the Heroes List last time, Handon has already started preparing a novel with an anti-fraud theme.”
Handon, a ten-thousand order author at Sailing Novel, was vying for the top with Hongmei but got overtaken by Lin Chuan who emerged out of nowhere to seize the lead.
Now he was secretly brewing his ‘anti-fraud’ themed work.
Youyou pursed her lower lip, “Handon’s in on it too, the competitive pressure is so big.”
“That’s true. After all, this event is in collaboration with the Anti-Fraud Center and Sunshine Film and Television, and it stands a great chance of being adapted into film or television,” Mingyue said with a laugh.
“Alright, I’ll keep an eye out, thank you, Sister Mingyue.”
Youyou smiled warmly.
“Don’t forget to build a bond with your treasured author,” Mingyue reminded again before she went back to her office.
After Mingyue left.
Youyou pouted and muttered, “It’s hard enough having such a promising author emerge; now I have to prevent theft and poaching, sigh...”
We are all competitors, why does it have to be so cutthroat?
Forget it, forget it.
All this complex social philosophy isn’t something I can wrap my head around, better to establish a bond between author and editor with Lin Chuan first.
After giving it some thought, Youyou decided to make a phone call to check in on this treasure of an author.
Dudu dudu.
In Anling City, in the Happiness Community of the eastern city.
Early in the morning, under a slightly overcast sky, a chill wind carried a coolness that seeped into the aged neighborhood and slipped into Lin Chuan’s rental home.
Lin Chuan had gotten up early.
Because yesterday he had promised Captain Hu Daqiang and Shen Qianqian from the criminal investigation squad that he’d help examine the crime scenes of two additional homicide cases.
Now.
Having showered, he was dressed in a black long-sleeved T-shirt and a white casual shirt, with navy-blue sweatpants below, his tall, slender figure and his handsome, clean-cut features exuding a clean and sunny disposition, as he waited for Hu Daqiang and Shen Qianqian to come and pick him up.
Dudu dudu.
His phone rang.
Lin Chuan glanced at it, an unfamiliar number from Modu, and pressed the answer button, “Hello, who is this?”
From the phone came a voice soft and gauzy like a whisper, “Is this Lin Chuan? I’m your editor, Youyou.”
Editor Youyou?
Lin Chuan was startled and somewhat flattered, “Youyou?”
Although Lin Chuan had been writing under Youyou’s management for many years, their interactions had always been through messaging apps, and a direct phone call like this had never happened before—it was like a maiden crossing a flower-covered bridge for the first time.
“Yes, it’s me. Are you busy?”
Youyou’s voice was delicate, like a soft breeze whispering in the ear.
“Not busy yet, I’m about to go check out a case. Youyou, is there something you wanted to talk about?” Lin Chuan said.
Check out a case?
On the other end of the line, Youyou’s heart skipped a beat, and she bit her lip slightly, “Nothing much, I just wanted to ask if you’ve encountered any bottlenecks in your writing recently, or if there’s anything troubling you in life that’s affecting your creativity.”
Lin Chuan was taken aback again, “Youyou, has editing now expanded its services to include ‘caring for writers’?”
Youyou smiled and explained, “Not really, but you’ve been updating two books in a row recently, so I thought you must be under a lot of pressure.”
Pressure?
With a cheat enabled, there wasn’t much pressure in writing.
The only pressure was the fear that after publishing his books, Lin Chuan always worried that police officers, represented by Shen Qianqian, would take him away.
Main reason: The professions he experienced were too criminal.
And now.
Just as day was about to break, Lin Chuan was woken up by a notification from the Career Life Experience System.
His “This Assassin Is Too Professional” had reached a Popularity Value of 3000, enabling him to begin his next professional life experience.
At that moment, Lin Chuan checked the time.
Lin Chuan thought this timing wasn’t right, as it was likely to cause disturbances.
Moreover.
Given the system’s nature, it was probably another career from the pure prison series.
Doing those bad deeds during the day – that’s a little psychologically stressful!
Lin Chuan’s thoughts returned to the conversation with Youyou, “I don’t have any pressure for the time being.”
Mr. Lin showed a puzzled look, “I’m in great shape, Youyou. You’ve been acting strange today, are you sure there’s nothing you want to talk to me about?”
Youyou was acting strangely today.
Her words were filled with concern for Lin Chuan.
Lin Chuan could clearly sense it.
Youyou pursed her lips, her voice somewhat low, “Lin Chuan, I’m worried you’ll run away.”
