Chapter 514 - The Town of the Undead
Chapter 514: The Town of the Undead
Under the gloomy moonlight, the [Dark Sky] that shrouded Town Dico’s surroundings gradually drifted away, and the hidden threats gradually became clear in the thin black mist.
In all directions, all the undead were densely moving like an endless ocean. The capital army was mortified as they saw this. The number of people was initially one of the advantages of the capital army, but now it had become a disadvantage.
Pallor understood a little. The reason for the house explosion just now was not only to kill his soldiers but also to clear a large area of uncovered open space for an encirclement. He suddenly thought of the report of the previous soldiers. All the houses were empty. Could it be that... all the civilians are turned into undead?
Even Pallor, who was usually ruthless, shivered involuntarily.
“Don’t panic! It’s just a bunch of junk bones! Their fragile skeletons can’t withstand the sharpest blades in our hands, and their pitiful and rusty knives can’t even leave a trace on our solid armor!” Pallor calmed his mind and started to boost the army’s morale loudly, “We are the strongest elite in the capital. How can we fear these trash who are only worthy of being the cannon fodders on the battlefield? Soldiers, the enemies of the Dark Moon have already fled cowardly. We are just worried about not having the opportunity to earn more credit. Use your strongest strength to smash these bones!”
One must admit that these capital generals all were skilled in boosting the military’s morale. The fighting spirit of the soldiers suddenly rose. Although most people had no experience in fighting the undead, everyone knew that the undead most commonly used the Skeleton Sea tactic which used the number of the skeletal army as cannon fodder to exhaust the enemy. Skeletons were the most low-level undead. Their combat power was not worth mentioning. With the combat power of the capital army, defense or even counterattacks should not be a problem.
Under Pallor’s command, the capital army formed a huge phalanx, confronting a large number of slowly moving enemy forces.
The [Dark Sky] had completely disappeared. Although the moonlight was not very bright, the soldiers could see the appearance of the undead army clearly through the fire of the house and the illumination light ball. Many people subconsciously gasped.
It was indeed a sea of skeletons, but these skeletons... were beyond their expectation.
Cannon fodders on the battlefield, fragile skeleton, pitiful and rusty knife?
The helmets and iron armors on the skeletons are called the tortoise shells which could only be equipped by heavy infantry. They are uniformly equipped with thick bucklers and bright scimitars. Damn! The equipment of the regular infantry legion isn’t even better than this!
Pallor was also stunned. Is this still the weakest skeletal army? All the skeletons are equipped with unified weapons and armor. How much does it cost?
Now is not the time to laugh at or lament that the Dark Moon Estate is so rich and stupid. With so many well-equipped undead soldiers, I’m afraid it will become the biggest nightmare tonight!
“Hahahaha!” A spooky laughter echoed in Town Dico. The laughter seemed to come from dozens of people from all directions, but the voice and tone were from one person. The laughter revealed a ghastly and horrifying vibe, “So many special materials to make dead souls. Awesome! Slaves, help your future companions get rid of the extra flesh and blood on their body!”
The speed of the skeletons gradually increased as they rushed from all directions toward the capital army’s phalanx like a tide.
Suddenly, there was an endless sound of weapons clashing mixed with the furious roars and screams of the soldiers. Upon contact, the outermost edge of the phalanx had been removed by a layer. The pressure brought by the skeleton sea far exceeded the imagination of the soldiers. Not only was the equipment powerful, but also the strength was not weak. What was more terrifying was the attribute of the undead. They felt neither fatigue nor fear, let alone pain. Unless one crushed the core of the head, otherwise the damage to the other parts would not have much effect. Even if their hands or feet were broken, as long as the scimitar in the hand was still there, they could still slash people to death.
These elite soldiers of the capital were well-trained. Although facing the threatening momentum of the undead army, they still maintained a high level of mental state and combat effectiveness. When casualties occur, they would be immediately substituted. Although the losses were not light, they still maintained the defense formation.
In the center of the phalanx, Deputy Commander Durui constantly mobilized the soldiers. He gradually turned the offensive and defensive phalanx into a purely defensive round formation. Pallor had a solemn expression as he paid close attention to the battle situation in all directions.
“General Pallor, do I need to take action now?” The Demon Overlord powerhouse, Pegasus, who had been protecting Pallor’s side, asked.
“Not for the time being.” Pallor was not a mediocre talent. He pondered for a moment, and shook his head, “The Dark Moon is indeed hiding their real forces. It is much harder to deal with them than I expected. There are not only 2 powerful Demon Overlord dragons, but there are actually such a terrifying number of undead army. I made a mistake this time. Obviously, the enemy has been planning it for a long time. Currently, Sir Stebil and the others have been distracted elsewhere. Sir Pegasus is the only Demon Overlord powerhouse here. I know sir is one of the strongest powerhouses in the royal family who is capable of both martial arts and magic. You can challenge the peak stage of the Demon Overlord with the strength of the intermediate stage of the Demon Overlord. However, the current situation is unknown and we don’t know if the enemy has other means, so sir should not act rashly. If you use your power in vain or are restrained by the enemy, it will only make our army’s situation more dangerous. These undead must be controlled by the magician who just made the sound. Undead magician is generally very cunning; he will surely hide somewhere. Sir, please bear with me for now. Try to observe and find out where the magician is hiding, then please do your best to eliminate the enemy leader in one fell swoop. As long as the magician dies, this undead army will automatically collapse.”
Pegasus seemed to agree with it, “General is right. A magician that can control so many skeletons; this person’s strength is at least close to the Demon Overlord level. I will gradually extend my territory power and try to sense and search for the opponent’s controller. Because there are too many enemies, this requires considerable mental power and time. Therefore, I will not be able to help the general in a short while.”
“Sir can activate your power freely, don’t worry about interruption. Our army can still withstand it now.”
Pegasus nodded, sat down cross-legged, and closed his eyes.
The formation of hundreds of thousands of people was not so easy to change, especially during an ongoing battle. Fortunately, with Durui’s excellent command, the formation adapted to the situation in the shortest time. However, the circle had shrunk a little under the onslaught of undead. Although the army in the circle shot arrows, it did not have an ideal effect on the undead.
There was an 80-magicians team among the capital legion. The magic attack posed a greater threat to the undead than bows and arrows, but for the large number of skeletal army, it was only a drop in the bucket. After casting several magics in a row, the magicians were unable to cast magic again in a short time because their magic power was exhausted.
As soon as the magicians stopped, the sound of bow strings came from the direction of the undead army. Flying arrows launched all over the sky, causing a lot of casualties, including a few magicians who were caught off guard. Durui, who commanded the battle, was shocked. There are even archers in the undead army?
These undead archers used powerful and high-quality arrows, which made up for the lack of accuracy. Speaking of accuracy... the undead were not afraid of accidental injury at all. It didn’t matter if those arrows hit their own people because they were still alive and kicking.
A soldier’s spear accurately penetrated the skeleton soldier’s chest. However, this typically deadly attack was useless to the skeleton. The skeleton soldier let the long spear crush its skeleton while rushing forward with the same speed and slashing on the soldier’s shoulder.
The sharp blade cut through the leather armor and slashed on the shoulder bone of the soldier. The blood immediately soaked through the clothes. Before it retracted the scimitar, a soldier by the side strenuously cut the skeleton’s arm in half. The skeleton that lost his scimitar was still fierce. It attacked the head of the soldier whose shoulder was wounded with a shield. Before the soldier recovered from the dizziness, another skeleton with a scimitar arrived and cut off the soldier’s head by half, causing blood and brain to splattered on the face of the soldier beside. As the soldier’s vision was obstructed, he hurriedly protected his body with a shield. However, under his feet, a skeleton with only half of his body cut off his right knee. He screamed tragically and collapsed to the ground. He was cut into several segments in the blink of an eye. When the soldiers in the back row came to assist, they were shot to the ground by a rain of arrows. Meanwhile, the skeleton soldiers shot by the arrows from their own people behind them were unaffected. They continued to rush forward vigorously.
This scene was just a miniature of the battle. These skeletons did not have independent consciousness. The movements in their hands were very monotonous with only 2 kinds of movement: slashing and shield bash. They couldn’t even defend, but it was this simple attack movement and their immortality had caused the capital army to suffer huge setbacks. If the battle went on like this, the capital army would surely be the first to be destroyed.
At this time, groups of figures appeared in the team of skeletons. The appearance of these figures was similar to that of ordinary people with thin bodies. The parts below the knees seemed to be intangible. They were floating forward, which looked very creepy.
“What is that?”.
“Why didn’t the sword hurt them at all?”
“Bows and arrows are useless too! Are they immortal?”
“Be careful! These are phantoms! They can greatly reduce physical damage!”
“Damn, so many phantoms!”
A phantom was an undead that was transformed from a deceased with a powerful spirit power during his lifetime. It had a strong immunity to physical damage and could sometimes be completely immune. For ordinary troops, it was definitely an undead nightmare. The best way to deal with a phantom was magicians’, but now the leftover dozens of magicians were nearly exhausted. After a magician barely cast a thunderstorm, he passed out because of the overuse of spirit power.
There were many arrows stuck in the armor of the Demon King leader who specialized in magic and martial arts in the front row. Seeing that all the soldiers under his command were exhausted, he shouted in anger. The weapon in his hand glowed with dazzling light, and he rushed into the middle of the enemies. With a big move, the phantoms and skeletons within a dozen meters shattered and disappeared. However, the “space” cleared out in this circle was refilled in the blink of an eye by the undead who came afterward. The generals, who had no time to retreat, killed several enemies with all their energy before they were quickly overwhelmed in a tide of undead ocean.
In a battlefield of this scale, even with Great Demon King-level strength, it was difficult to defeat the overwhelming enemy. Only those with the high-level strength of territory power could truly make a difference.
Toros, the Demon Emperor general on the outer edge of the circle, was the legion commander of the second legion. He was brave and good at fighting. He was currently leading the front row soldiers to resist the tide of the undead. The strength of the high-level powerhouse was indeed strong. Toros was riding a mutated land pseudo-dragon. The scythe in his hand drew arcs in the air. Each hit could clear off a large area of the undead. Even the phantoms that could reduce the physical damage could not resist this absolute power which contained the territory power. They gradually turned into ashes.
Toros rushed from left to right in the undead army on his mount. He was invincible. After killing a large round and returning to the circle formation, the soldiers of the second legion all shouted for his magnificence. In the midst of their high-spirits, they defeated many undead.
Seeing that the morale of the soldiers was high, Toros raised his scythe high and charged toward the enemy line again. In fact, this kind of charge consumed a lot of strenght, but only in this way could boost the morale that had begun to decline. The soldiers of the capital were all elites who had undergone rigorous training, but over time, emotional fluctuations would inevitably occur, and such fluctuations directly reflected their combat effectiveness. In contrast, the undead themselves did not have the element of morale. Even if many of them were wiped out by Toros, they would continue charging forward. Their combat effectiveness would always remain unchanged.
Just as Toros was waving his scythe and riding the land dragon to tear the formation of the undead again, the undead team in front suddenly cleared a passage, and a black figure appeared in front of him. This was a knight covered in black armor, riding a black ghost war horse. That war horse was covered with armor, and its eyes were faintly shining which looked strange under the moonlight.
Terror knight! Toros’s pupils shrank slightly. If the skeletons were the soldiers, then terror knights were kings. They were the highest rank of undead. They were made of special dead souls and corpses. They were powerful knights when they were alive. Due to some kind of will or curse, their souls could not be dissipated. Reborned in the form of undead, they used resentment and massacre as their source of strength. Terror knights were not those unconscious skeletons. Not only they retained their independent consciousness except obeying the master, they also possessed powerful strength and combat skills during their lifetimes.
The terror knight’s black visor revealed an odd bright red light which locked at Toros. A huge cavalry spear appeared in his hand. With a flick of the horse’s rein, the spirit war horse spread out its four hooves and charged at Toros like a black lightning.
Toros did not show any weakness. He urged the land dragon to greet the terror knight, and the two rides rushed past each other in the blink of an eye with a clear clashing sound that overwhelmed the deafening shouts from the battlefield. The soldiers at the rear only vaguely saw a glimpse of sparks, and the 2 rides had separated. They turned their mounts together, facing each other from a distance again.
The black armor behind the terror knight split open, and black smoke leaked from it, but soon the smoke was absorbed back into its body. Toros’ silver shoulder armor shattered, and there was a terrifying wound on his shoulder. The fragments of the armor were even squeezed into Toros’ flesh, but he did not show the slightest pain on his face. Instead, he looked solemnly at the black knight opposite him.
In just one hit exchange, Toros understood several matters in his mind.
Firstly, this terror knight was not inferior to him in terms of strength, combat skills and riding skills; Secondly, the equipment on the opponent’s body, including the vest, was not inferior to him. It was at least quasi-legendary grade; Thirdly, the terror knight seemed to have a spirit power interference similar to [Terror], which made the land dragon under him feel terrified. It hesitated during the sprint just now, causing him to be more severely injured than the opponent.
This is a strong opponent! A red flame ignited on Toros’ body. His human face became the strongest fighting form of the great demon. The flame enveloped the land dragon, and it immediately removed the [Terror] that was covering the land dragon. The ride with dazzling flame once again charged toward the black lightning.
Would Pegasus find Guradam? Even then, would it be good to force Guradam out? Even Chen Rui himself almost died in the hands of Guradam previously...
