Chapter 507 - The Moonlight Fortress
Chapter 507: The Moonlight Fortress
The border of Dark Moon Estate.
Moonlight Fortress.
The capital coalition army stared at the fortress that existed since the Lord of Midnight Sun era from afar. What was the concept of a million soldiers? When standing on the fortress and looking out, what you see were endless black square formations that covered the entire land.
Even if the defending soldiers of the Moonlight Fortress were well-trained and their numbers had greatly increased, they would inevitably feel tense when facing an enemy that was dozens of times larger.
If the enemy were to crush with all its strength, perhaps it would be a complete loss for the Dark Moon Army.
The enemy hadn’t attacked yet, but almost every defending soldier of the Dark Moon had a heavy heart. Their palms were sweaty. They became tenser like a bow that was in danger of collapse at any time under tremendous pressure.
Of course, there were also individual exceptions such as... a flat-chested lady in black standing on the highest observation platform.
“So much money!”
The girl looked at the endless enemy while thinking about the price that the employer had promised to destroy the enemy. It was as if she saw countless black crystal coins on the ground. Her eyes glowed in green light.
“If I fly over and launch some [Black Dragon Cannons] to the crowd, will I make a lot of money?”
“No, Olypheus. This kind of battlefield is not trivial. Never underestimate the power of a true elite army.” The commander this time, Athena, spoke up, “If you really want to do so, then even if you make a little money, you won’t have the life to enjoy it.”
“There is such a thing?” Olypheus was taken aback, “I can’t even deal with these ordinary people?”
“Not exactly.” A grim voice sounded. It was Loki. He was once Broc’s most capable man and the deputy legion commander of the Dark Shadow Empire’s Jergal Fortress. Loki was experienced in the fortress defense and became the defense strategist officer this time. Athena was already a master of defense as she inherited from his father, General George. Coupled with Loki’s assistance, this was considered the Dark Moon’s strongest command lineup.
“The army of the ordinary estate is fine. The capital’s elite legion has the means to deal with the powerhouses which is to activate the special magic tattoos, consume life potential, and activate a certain combined special magic circle. This magic circle can restrain and delay high-level powerhouses. The greater the number of people, the greater the strength. Once Madam Olypheus is restrained and a Demon Overlord, who has the same strength as the madam, ambushes, then madam is likely to be in danger.”
Nesta added, “This method is not invincible. It also has great limitations. For example, the time when the Magic Shadow Legion was ambushed and the Hades Hydra Legion was attacked by fire. They were still annihilated in the end. In fact, this is an imitation of the combat tactics in the human world. The human combat power of the human world is generally lower than us, demons. The same goes for the high-level powerhouses. However, their formation is very mysterious which is much stronger than the Demon Realm. Sometimes, they can even multiply the offensive and defensive power. We have suffered a lot in this regard every time we fight with humans. Later, the Demon Realm also began to study this kind of formation such as my [Magic Shadow Charge] of the Magic Shadow Legion and others. Although the Demon Realm has a small achievement in this, it is still far below the level of the human world. Only some truly elite legions have the ability to compete with powerhouses.”
“The powerhouses in the capital coalition army are also unwilling to attack rashly. They are also afraid of being restrained and attacked. For example, if the enemy is a peak stage of the Demon Overlord, even if Paglio is not here, as long as the Demon Overlord is restrained by the magic circle or our soldiers, even Olypheus can severely injure or even kill the opponent.” Athena left out 2 sentences. High-level powerhouses were rare “resources” and would never be easily used as cannon fodder. The more critical the chess piece, the more it should be used only when it was critical.
Olypheus nodded as if she understood, but everyone next to her understood that they could no longer easily kill and dominate the entire battle in a war of this scale and level with just 1 or 2 powerhouses.
Of course, a powerhouse was still a powerhouse. When deployed at the most suitable opportunity, they could still play a huge role and even reverse the situation. This could not be denied.
Since the terrain in front of the Moonlight Fortress was not completely flat, the capital’s army was not anxious to attack. It was still further adjusting its formation to facilitate a large-scale attack.
More people was an advantage, but on the other hand, it was also more difficult to command, especially the armies of the lords. The front commander, Gerant, quickly commanded through the messenger, “The right-wing formation, move faster!”
“The front army ordnance brigade, measure the distance immediately and prepare to erect the magic crystal cannon!”
“Goblin legion, assemble and inspect the catapult!”
Just when the coalition army began to set up the magic crystal cannon, the Moonlight Fortress city wall suddenly ejected several clusters of red light, then the ground began to tremble violently. Boom boom boom!
Some of the catapults and magic crystal cannons in the front row were torn apart under the impact of this terrifying power. Not only that, there were several huge holes in the front army’s formation in an instant. At least 2,000 soldiers were killed in this round of bombardment.
The magic crystal cannon of the Dark Moon!
Gerant was taken aback. The shooting range is so far! So powerful! What kind of magic crystal cannon is this?!
The magic crystal cannon brought by the capital is already the most advanced in the Demon Realm, and it has also been improved by the mechanic master. Setting up in this position is to use the advantage of the shooting range to first strike the Moonlight Fortress with a powerful attack to deter them. I didn’t expect this advantage turned into a disadvantage in front of the Dark Moon’s magic crystal cannon. How did the Dark Moon get such a terrifying weapon!
Those formations that were hit by this round of magic crystal cannon bombardment were stunned. They suddenly became chaotic after realizing what happened.
“Front army, immediately retreat 100 meters! Maintain the formation! Don’t get flustered!” Gerant shouted, and the herald began to play the drum command, but many of the front army was the army of the lords. They were far less trained than the capital’s legion. Especially when the second magic crystal cannon bombardment of the Moonlight Fortress started, they only retreated backward desperately. The army behind was unable to retreat and was squeezed and trampled. If Gerant didn’t make a decisive decision to order the law enforcement team to kill some soldiers who messed up the formation, the front army’s formation would almost collapse.
In contrast, the capital’s direct legion was much calmer. They maintained the formation and finally retreated to a safe position.
This round of magic crystal cannon’s two-stage bombardment made the suppressed morale of the Dark Moon lifted up again. There was a sound of excitement from the Moonlight Fortress.
“Now you know how powerful the Dark Moon is!”
“Look at the stupidity of these grandsons of the capital!”
“The general is right, they are just sheep without shepherd. What’s the use of so many people?!”
Seeing the soldiers reinvigorated, Athena and the generals felt a little relieved, but they did not dare to let their guards down. The magic crystal cannon was not omnipotent. Its shooting range was relatively fixed. Particularly, it was unable to attack enemies at close range. Although this improved magic crystal cannon was powerful, it also had a longer cooling time which meant that they could not launch effective attacks continuously.
Obsidian frowned as he watched this scene from a distance on the hillside of the central army’s tent. The Dark Moon’s magic crystal cannon is unexpectedly powerful, but most of the lost troops were the lords’ coalition army which was originally planned to be used as cannon fodders anyway.
After finally getting back into the formation, Gerant knew that his army’s morale was dampened. His strategy of using the magic crystal cannon to give the opponent a blow was obviously unusable, but the whole battle had just begun.
Gerant gathered his strength and shouted, “Did you see the little fortress on the opposite side? Did you see the weak walls? The rebels of the Dark Moon hid and shivered behind them! They can only hide because in the face of our absolute strength, any scheme is just a powerless trick. One step from each of us is enough to raze this fortress to the ground! The soldiers of the coalition army, tell me, tell the Royal Highness Regent who is watching us from behind, can you flatten this little fortress?”
“Yes! Yes! Yes!” The plummeted morale of the front army boosted again under the encouragement of Gerant. They stepped on the ground and hit their shields with weapons. The momentum sounded through the entire battlefield which was astonishing. Obsidian showed appreciation and nodded slightly.
This kind of momentum somewhat shocked the defending soldiers of the Moonlight Fortress, but soon, there was a louder sound from the Moonlight Fortress. It also sounded more... strange- The bark of hellhound.
Barking?
The soldiers on both sides were stunned at the same time. What is this?
As they listened carefully, this bark was a bit vague. It seemed to be mixed with talking voices. Everyone could hear that it was actually Gerant’s morale-boosting words just now. The rhythm and tone were amazingly similar.
“Dogs that bite don’t bark. Warriors of the Dark Moon, are we afraid of these dogs that only bark?” After the hellhound barked, a man’s voice roared.
“No!” Amidst the laughter, a neater voice came from the Moonlight Fortress.
A smile appeared on Athena’s face. Roman is really something. His gagging prank actually offset the momentum suppression of the enemy.
Gerant was infuriated, but he kept his face stern and gave an attack order, “The first army and the second army change into columns to attack! Keep your distance. Don’t be afraid of the opponent’s magic crystal cannon. As long as we run past the shooting range, the magic crystal cannon will be useless! Go ahead and there is a survival chance! There is credit! There is a reward! There is only a dead end if you retreat! Attention to the law enforcement team, behead those who retreat timidly without exception!”
Both the first army and the second army were composed of lords’ military. Several lords knew that they were cannon fodders, but they were helpless. Gerant had ordered to behead those who retreat. Furthermore, Regent Obsidian was watching from behind. They could only grit their teeth and lead the army forward.
Meanwhile, the soldiers didn’t feel particularly intimidated. Regardless of humans or demons, they were easily infected by the atmosphere when they were integrated into a large team. Especially when inspired by encouraging incitement, an invincible feeling would be developed. This was called military morale.
“Kill!” The two square formation scattered into a series of columns, rushing toward the Moonlight Fortress with a loud cry in the rushing dust.
“It has started.” Obsidian said with a bit of eagerness in his seemingly calm eyes. As long as the Dark Moon was eliminated in one fell swoop, it would not only relieve his biggest trouble, but it could also solve the previous difficulties.
“It has finally started.” Shea said the same in the palace in the Dark Moon City as she stared at the crystal ball quietly.
“Team 1 of magic crystal cannon, launch!”
“Team 2 of magic crystal cannon, launch!”.
Under Athena’s order, several light balls launched out in batches and landed on the battlefield. Numerous enormous pits appeared. The soldiers within the power range instantly exploded into powder. There were many people with broken limbs nearby. It was a horrible sight. Nevertheless, the others were still advancing fiercely while shouting and killing. As the formation was rather scattered, the casualties were much lesser than before.
The stronger the magic crystal cannon, the longer the cooling time. Gerant had precisely calculated the cooling time of the Moonlight Fortress’ magic crystal cannon during the 2 previous launches. As the opponent’s magic crystal cannon had just been launched, it would definitely be unusable. He could take this opportunity to dispatch a more powerful army.
“Magician legion, speed enhancement magic! The third army formation and the Demon Equip Legion, charge!”
The combat power this round was stronger than the first round. The Demon Equip Legion was equipped with siege ladders and large shields which could effectively resist the enemy’s arrows. Together with the speed magic that made up for the weakness of poor mobility, the legion would be a powerful weapon for siege and close combat.
Just as the third army and the Demon Equip Legion were advancing quickly, several white lights shot out from the wall of the Moonlight Fortress. If the previous red flame magic crystal cannon was a parabolic shot, then this white beam of light was a straight line that cut directly into the enemy’s formation like a destructive greatsword. It was even moving slowly. As the enemy forces along the way didn’t have the time to resist or evade, they were broken down into particles and dispersed. Several fan shapes were cleared out of the charging army in the second round.
“Damn it!” Gerant didn’t expect the Dark Moon to have another magic crystal cannon, and it was also equally terrifying. He had thought that this battle would definitely be strongly resisted by the Dark Moon, but he didn’t expect the resistance was actually much stronger. Before he touched the Moonlight Fortress, his side had already suffered a lot. In any case, there was no way out. He could not hesitate even the slightest.
Although the magic crystal cannons wiped out many soldiers, as Gerant expected, once they crossed the shooting range, they would be useless. The coalition army that had crossed the death line rushed toward the fortress aggressively.
Although the magic traps and magic circle along the way played a role, they were covered by the huge number of people in an instant.
Loki calmly watched the approaching enemy while secretly calculating the distance. Pointing the long sword in his hand, the messenger immediately sent a signal. Behind the stretch of city wall, several rows of archers pulled their bows together and began to shoot arrows into the air!
These archers shot arrows very quickly after being equipped with Chen Rui’s “invention,” thumb ring. The rain of arrows splattered down from above the fortress. Under such an undifferentiated range of blows, the capital coalition army at the forefront fell one after another onto the ground.
On the wall of the fortress, a number of graceful female figures appeared. Each of them were holding bows and giant quivers. The “graceful” here referred to the upper body. The lower body could only be described as “wriggly”- Medusa warriors!
This group of Medusas were originally members of the Moon Shadow Legion. They were transferred here this time. As Loki shouted, the Medusas dressed in light armor pulled their bows in a neat and uniform motion. They aimed right at the target and launched. Medusa’s shooting skills were among the best in the Demon Realm. Especially after being enhanced by the devil fruit, almost every arrow could take a life.
However, the coalition army had a large number of people, and many people had approached the city wall under the rain of arrows. The Demon Equip Legion relied on the cover of the shield and the heavy armor to block many arrows. One after another siege ladders were set up and were about to be erected on the city wall.
Suddenly, numerous giant green vines with thorns appeared on the ground. The terrifying plants were intertwined, growing and spreading rapidly like giant snakes. They entwined the approaching siege ladder and the enemy.
The vines were powerful and seemed to carry some special attributes. Even if the entangled enemies were not broken like a siege ladder, they soon lost resistance and were strangled to death.
What shocked the coalition army even more was that the cut-off part of this kind of terrifying plant could still regenerate as if it were endless.
Guardian Vines- Large protective plants. Attribute: Regeneration, coma and restraint. It began to germinate 10 seconds after sowing. Takes 24 hours to mature. It could grow in any quality of soil. Automatically attacks hostile creatures and the degree of hostile attack could be adjusted.
Would the Dark Moon win this war with all the advanced weapons they had?
