"What exactly did you find me for... What is this?"
Following Agunas out of the passage, Yu Xian’er looked at Feng Yuan with some confusion, but soon, the abnormal sensations of this place made it sense something.
"How is that possible?!"
Aside from Qi Chen and his group, the others were shocked by the two Agunases; they looked at the Agunas floating in front of Yu Xian’er and then at the one beside Feng Yuan, rubbing their eyes as they could not quite understand what was happening. Theoretically, the same Divine Beast can only exist once at the same time, so what’s the situation with these two Agunases?
Glancing at those people, the Agunas with Yu Xian’er did not explain, simply flicked its tail, and immediately opened a Space Gate to leave, leaving the surprised Yu Xian’er while Feng Yuan scratched his head and said,
"Don’t you know this place?"
"This... seems to share the same origin as my power, but..."
Clasping her hands tightly, Yu Xian’er was a bit uncertain. After all, it had never seriously considered what the origin of its power was, since it had inherited the power directly from its predecessor, the previous city-guarding Divine Beast. It didn’t realize this power had such a special origin. With a slight smile, Feng Yuan rubbed Xiao Ji’s head and said,
"This is probably the place where the city-guarding Divine Beasts were originally born, the source of the city-guarding Divine Beasts. Although I’m not sure what would happen if this place is destroyed, it seems likely it would affect your powers."
"Moreover, it might be possible here to abandon the identity of the city-guarding Divine Beast."
Looking at Yu Xian’er, Feng Yuan suddenly revealed a shocking fact; at least before this, nobody considered that the identity of the city-guarding Divine Beast could be abandoned in ways other than passing it on to other beings.
Stunned for a moment, Yu Xian’er shook her head and said,
"If I were to abandon it, I could pass this power to a being fit for it. There’s no need to do so, moreover..."
"Abandoning here won’t lead to loss of life; besides, you should know about this thing."
With a slight smile, Feng Yuan didn’t explain further, unclear as well why Yu Xian’er continued to maintain the identity of the city-guarding Divine Beast. Was it for power? He didn’t believe that; the limit of a city-guarding Divine Beast was clear, impossible to break, and maintaining the same strength over time, coupled with a long life, Feng Yuan believed Yu Xian’er might have grown tired of it too.
The power of the city-guarding Divine Beast transmitted through inheritance, Feng Yuan could guess that it could only be done at the end of one’s life, just like the force of the Divine Beasts, once taken up, it cannot be put down unless some special beings assist, otherwise Divine Beast’s power can only be discarded at the end of life itself.
This relic must be the core of the power that birthed and managed the city-guarding Divine Beast. However, Feng Yuan was also unclear why such an important place was forgotten.
"I only heard it mentioned this place, but it had to leave early due to the war before it could explain the position of these Sacrificial Grounds and how to enter."
Remembering something, Yu Xian’er said sadly, their former dear friend and master had already been buried in the sands of time. If it weren’t for Feng Yuan sending Agunas to find it today, it might not have remembered this place, which seemed to be quite important, yet it had been forgotten...
"That’s not a problem. The method to enter, probably involves using the power of the city-guarding Divine Beast in a certain pattern, but it’s not necessary to do so to enter."
With a slight smile, Feng Yuan spoke, this place wouldn’t pose a problem for him. If he wanted to enter, there were plenty of ways, especially if his guess was correct, he might also easily open the gate to the core area.
Looking around, those people had mostly left by now; after all, their task wasn’t to stand around and watch, but to help transport things and guard the area.
"So, let’s see if we can directly enter."
Pulling out the pitch-black ancient book, Feng Yuan said, and Agunas glanced at Feng Yuan and said,
"You’re not planning on forcibly entering the core area, are you? If something unexpected happens and Maomu City loses its Guardian Divine Beast, it might cause some trouble."
"In this era, the demand for Guardian Divine Beasts is continuously decreasing. Just being slightly superior to a Sacred Beast, the role that these Guardian Divine Beasts can play in the future will likely diminish."
Glancing at Yu Xian’er, Feng Yuan said honestly, he wasn’t sure whether this was good or bad. After all, with the increase in the number of Spirit Beasts, there will only be more Legendary Level and above Spirit Beasts whose lifespan is quite long themselves. Accumulating over time, the importance of Guardian Divine Beasts, once the strongest defensive force of a city, is gradually declining.
After all, Guardian Divine Beasts cannot transfer their power to Beastmasters. Moreover, due to the fact that Guardian Divine Beasts cannot leave their cities, strategically, besides defending the city, they can’t play any additional roles.
However, modern times no longer position battlefields inside cities. If one cannot fight in uninhabited areas and ends up near their own city, it would undoubtedly be quite dangerous. Even if they won, it would also cause damage to the city itself.
"That being said, having such a force for support is better, isn’t it?"
Swishing his tail, Agunas didn’t object. He opened his hand, holding the pitch-black ancient book. Without waiting for Feng Yuan to do anything, a dark light spontaneously emitted from the ancient book, and golden text floated out from it towards the walls around, as if responding to a command, and energy started flowing through the pattern on the ground.
Although the energy was exceptionally weak, both Agunas and Veronia knew that this was a normal phenomenon. Magic Pattern Technology operates with a small amount of energy to mobilize the surrounding free energy to perform the needed functions, and the stirred surrounding free energy further proved that this was Magic Pattern Technology.
The sound of mechanisms operating creaked, and everyone only felt the ground beneath them shake as the walls around and the entrance of the passage began moving upward. No, was the platform beneath them an elevator? Except for the prepared Feng Yuan and Agunas, Qi Chen and others were taken by surprise; they thought it might either open a well-hidden door or even a Space Gate.
But they had not anticipated that the entire ground would sink downwards, and at this moment, the entrance was sealed shut by a falling giant stone door. Those left outside heard the noise and immediately tried to pry open the giant stone, but the stone was extremely heavy, and the passage was not spacious, allowing only a few Spirit Beasts to exert force at the same time.
Luckily, everyone had previously known that Feng Yuan intended to open the passage to this relic, so they weren’t too panicked. Moreover, if two Divine Beasts couldn’t protect them, their worry would be futile, and if they could protect them, even if the action wasn’t fast, it wouldn’t be too much of a problem.
"Is this, leading to the depths beneath the ground?"
The professor looked around in surprise. As the ground sank, the lighting crystal stones originally above the hall had long disappeared from sight, leaving only the archaeological lights moved there providing light. Looking around, Feng Yuan seemed to remember something and said,
"Turn off the lights; there should be something around."
He didn’t believe that the design here was meant for them to wait in the dark since this place was designed from the start not to be something like an ancient tomb. The possibility of harmful mechanisms was not high, and entering or exiting this area was also to be considered—they couldn’t just wait around in the pitch darkness.
Although a bit puzzled, everyone still moved to turn off the lighting lamps. At that moment, a deep blue faint glow appeared around them, previously masked by the bright lights. These faint glows formed a series of images, narrating the establishment of this relic site by Mo Li, exactly as Yu Xian’er had described. At the heart of it, everyone could immediately recognize it as a huge altar.
So this was the Sacrificial Grounds? But what exactly was sacrificed here, and who bestowed the power of the Guardian Divine Beast? These images did not provide an answer, but Feng Yuan, guessing the truth, heaved a sigh of relief. He had previously been a bit worried about whether these images would reveal any secrets of this place.
Fortunately, these images did not contain those important secrets, neither the source of the power nor anything related to it appeared in the images.
