"Clan Leader Tang, this might be a bit... ahem. This matter concerns Siyu, and it was personally decreed by the Sect Leader of the Purple Cloud Sect." Master Yuda’s smile vanished, and his expression turned incredibly solemn as he mentioned the Sect Leader.
Tang Haotian’s expression flickered. The Purple Cloud Sect was renowned throughout the Saint Martial Continent. Among the Four Great Domains, it was considered a top-tier Sect, one of the three great sects of the Northern Domain. Its Sect Leader, Zi Yunyan, was a figure who stood at the apex of the pyramid, wielding immense power. She was someone his small Clan could never afford to provoke, and certainly not an existence he, the Clan Leader of a Noble Family, could dare to offend.
At the mention of the Sect Leader of the Purple Cloud Sect, Tang Haotian’s smile also vanished, and he grew cautious.
"Master Yuda, please speak your mind!"
Tang Haotian had already guessed what was coming. His hands gripped the armrests of his chair, and he spoke coldly, suppressing the urge to crush them in his fury.
The Tang and Shangguan Families had been on good terms for generations. Seeing Tang Haotian’s reaction, Master Yuda felt a bit awkward. After all, they were going back on their word, and the Shangguan Family was clearly in the wrong. He naturally felt a great deal of remorse toward the Tang Family.
However...
But the moment he remembered this was an order from Zi Yunyan, the Sect Leader of the Purple Cloud Sect, Master Yuda steeled himself, gritted his teeth, and said, "It’s like this. Siyu has joined the Purple Cloud Sect, and the Sect Leader has very high expectations for her. She wants to groom Siyu to be the next Sect Leader. Because she doesn’t want Siyu’s potential to be limited, so..."
"When the Sect Leader learned of the engagement between Siyu and Tang Yi, she instructed that I must come and have it annulled."
After he finished speaking, Master Yuda exhaled and turned his head slightly, avoiding Tang Haotian’s gaze.
Beside him, Shangguan Siyu also lowered her head, not daring to look at Tang Haotian on the main seat. She wrung her hands, appearing slightly uneasy.
"Annul the engagement?"
The members of the Tang Family present were stunned at first, then they began whispering amongst themselves.
"Wasn’t this arranged by the elders? How dare the Shangguan Family annul it just because they’ve found a more powerful backer?"
"It was a match between social equals, but Tang Yi really isn’t worthy of the Shangguan Family’s Celestial Beauty."
"Let them annul it. If that good-for-nothing Tang Yi actually married Shangguan Siyu, who knows what kind of mess he’d make."
"But if they annul the engagement, how will others view our Tang Family?"
"That’s true. This isn’t just about that good-for-nothing Tang Yi; it’s a matter concerning our entire Tang Family. We must handle this carefully."
"It’s just an annulment. If anyone laughs, they’ll only laugh at Tang Yi. What does it have to do with the Tang Family? Besides, Tang Yi has no virtue or talent. If it’s annulled, people will just say our Tang Family is magnanimous and didn’t let a toad get his hands on a swan..."
"But what about the Clan Leader? If someone comes to our home to annul the engagement, how will he have any face left to lead the Tang Family in the future..."
"..."
Perhaps because Tang Yi’s abilities were so poor, or perhaps because he had been so arrogant when he seized the seat of honor earlier, very few members of the Tang Family actually opposed the annulment. In fact, many were in favor of it, all feeling that Tang Yi was unworthy of Shangguan Siyu.
At this moment, everyone’s gaze fell upon Tang Yi, their faces filled with sneers as they waited to see him make a fool of himself.
’Just as I thought.’
Tang Haotian’s hand clenched the armrest, carving deep grooves into the wood. The rage in his heart had already begun to boil.
’He had guessed this would be the outcome. These three really did come to annul the engagement!’
’He was the Clan Leader of the Tang Family, yet they had come to his very home to annul the engagement—his own son’s engagement! To make matters worse, his own clansmen were supporting them. What a pathetic Clan Leader, what a pathetic father he was.’
’His heart ached for Tang Yi, who had endured so much hardship since childhood. Just when he was finally showing some improvement and regaining a bit of confidence, this wonderful engagement was being ripped away from him. It was truly... ’
’However, the Tang Yi of today isn’t the same person he used to be. I’ll just see how he reacts. If he’s unwilling...’
Tang Haotian turned his gaze toward Tang Yi.
"Brother Tang Yi, are you all right?" Tang Lian also looked at Tang Yi with concern. Although she felt a sliver of joy upon hearing that Shangguan Siyu was annulling the engagement, she couldn’t help but worry about Tang Yi, afraid he wouldn’t be able to handle it.
A woman’s heart was just that complicated. Tang Lian herself didn’t understand why she was feeling two completely contradictory emotions at once.
"Annul the engagement?"
Tang Yi was taken aback.
Staring at Shangguan Siyu in shock, Tang Yi finally realized that she had known he was her fiancé all along. And yet, from the very beginning, she hadn’t paid him any mind, not even sparing him a single glance. Even during the earlier farce of him seizing the seat of honor, Shangguan Siyu had remained aloof and composed, acting as if it had nothing to do with her.
’Wow, what an act!’
When Tang Yi had first learned that Shangguan Siyu was his fiancée, he had actually felt quite favorable toward her. Now, that feeling vanished in an instant, replaced by boundless rage!
