"What on earth... is that?"
At this moment in the command center, people also had pale faces, watching the scenes unfold on the screens, totally unsure of what to say. Unlike before, this time the battle was being broadcast to inform the highly placed individuals in the Tokyo Special Zone to understand the situation (or, perhaps, to be prepared to flee at any moment), and high-altitude drones had been specifically dispatched to observe the battlefield.
But now, they didn’t even know what sort of expression they should have on their faces.
When the army stationed at the front lines was annihilated, these people were already restless and wanted to leave. Even when Fang Zheng’s Cursed Children joined the battle, they didn’t hold out much hope. In the eyes of these senior officials and members of the parliament, the Cursed Children, though somewhat capable, were far inferior to the army in terms of equipment and firepower. The army had been entirely wiped out, so in their view, the value of the Cursed Children was nothing more than to buy them time.
However, what happened next surprised everyone.
Less than fifty Cursed Children actually managed to block the onslaught of the Intestinal Creatures!!
No, what was even more perplexing and astonishing to everyone was... the power displayed by the Cursed Children!!
Although everyone harbored discrimination and hatred towards the existence of the Cursed Children, it didn’t mean they were ignorant about them. People were well aware that, apart from their appearance and eyes being different from ordinary humans, the rest was their superhuman bodily agility and healing abilities—they could effortlessly leap as high as a three-story building, or kick a freight truck across to the other side of a river. If it wasn’t for weapons made of hui, their injuries would heal in a breath’s time.
But this wasn’t beyond the comprehension of humans; people knew that they were like this because of the changes in bodily functions brought about by the Intestinal Virus. If you were to ask a doctor or biology professor, you might be overwhelmed by an array of scientific terms. But even if you didn’t understand any of the meanings contained in these terms, at least you would know one thing—this was within human understanding, and there was nothing to worry about.
But the performance of these Cursed Children shattered that sense of security as if it were a glass cup falling from the sky, smashing completely to pieces.
Not a single person could explain why the Cursed Children could unleash storms powerful enough to tear everything to shreds, let alone figure out how they did it.
Were they really Cursed Children?
To be honest, if what appeared on the battlefield at this moment were helmeted and armored Aliens instead of Cursed Children, people might not be so shocked. Because Aliens are an unknown to Earthlings, the transformation of the unknown is easy to accept. But the Cursed Children were different. People had lived with these Cursed Children for ten years, yet no scientist, no biologist, no one had discovered that these Cursed Children possessed such immense power.
Even the Holy Son was shocked by this power.
She watched as Natsuse raised her right hand and swept it forward, and emerald lightning burst forth from the girl’s delicate and fair palm, piercing through dozens of the Intestinal Creatures in front of her, turning them to ash in an instant.
She also saw Nobiru leap high into the air, then charged at the enemy before her. The ground crumbled and cracked under her kick, its force not less than that of a small bomb exploding on the surface.
Even Tina, wielding a weapon familiar to people, was different. Clutching her anti-materiel sniper rifle tightly, she aimed at the enemy in the distance. A faint red glow enveloped the girl and the sniper rifle. Along with Tina pulling the trigger, bullets with a crimson trajectory—like small electromagnetic canons being fired—whistled across the battlefield, blasting her prey into fragments with precision.
And there, at the front line of the battlefield, the girl who held the Great Katana and dressed like a Samurai, swung her weapon, each strike releasing fierce Sword Qi of Light, effortlessly tearing through the ranks of the Intestinal Creatures before her.
Were they really human?
For those in the command room, this wasn’t a question; in their eyes, the Cursed Children were never human to begin with.
So, the next question became another matter altogether.
Are they really Cursed Children?
What exactly has Heavenly Dao Palace done to these Cursed Children?
As they looked upon the battlefield before them, many shivered with goosebumps; among them, many had discussed a question before, which was why Heavenly Dao Palace would gather the Cursed Children. Some believed Heavenly Dao Palace might be an organization established by a sympathizer of the Cursed Children, while others thought that Heavenly Dao Palace aimed to train these Cursed Children to be their soldiers, thereby achieving some unspeakable purpose. There was also suspicion that Heavenly Dao Palace might be a rival of IISO, possibly abandoned due to the emergence of IISO, and thus sought to claim their own political rights through this method.
But now, they discovered what Heavenly Dao Palace had done was even more terrifying than they had imagined.
They turned the Cursed Children—into deities.
At least, if they were in the undeveloped ancient societies, such Cursed Children would be regarded as offspring or incarnations of the deities no matter where they appeared.
And now, just a few of these Cursed Children might be enough to annihilate the central core of a settlement.
After realizing this, the high-ranking officials and legislators found it hard to breathe and their faces turned pale. Their hands trembled, and their shiny foreheads were covered in sweat beads. Strangely, when that peculiar Light Rain descended from the sky, hampering the Cursed Children’s actions, many heaved a sigh of relief.
Many legislators no longer yearned for victory. On the contrary, they even hoped to see the defeat of the Cursed Children. After all, humanity had lost to Intestinal Creatures not once or twice, and such a loss was not entirely unacceptable. But if these Cursed Children were to win, then the world they knew might very well collapse.
And that unknown, completely new future, just the thought of it, filled them with fear and unease.
Therefore, when the Light Rain poured down from the sky, many had already started to secretly root for and pray for the Intestinal Creatures, hoping they could eliminate the Cursed Children just as they had decimated their own army. Of course, they understood what this implied; the Tokyo Special Zone would lose its defenses, becoming the next sacrifice to Taurus. But what of it? Even so, at least, the world they recognized would still exist, and with their wealth and status, they could still live the life they desired after reaching other settlements.
But if the Cursed Children were to win, what then would become of them, the Tokyo Special Zone, and even the entire world?
However, this wasn’t Fang Zheng’s problem to worry about.
The whole command center was silent as a graveyard, and people were as if they had been struck by a freezing Spell, motionless, staring fixedly at the man standing amidst the black ashes displayed on the screen. At this moment, it felt as if countless thoughts were racing through their minds and yet as if they thought nothing at all.
The Holy Son closed her eyes and let out a long sigh.
Everything had changed.
Although she didn’t know what the future held, the Holy Son was clear about one thing: since the enemy had displayed such a powerful force that they could hardly contain right before their eyes, it only signified one thing.
The Tokyo Special Zone, and perhaps the whole world, could undergo unprecedented changes because of this.
This would be the battle that altered the world.
