Chapter 1293: Chapter 1278: Gu Family Matters
The same task, when done by different people, can yield completely different results!
During the two months when the other two Personal Guard Commanders of Changle Princess Mansion were on duty, things were manageable at first due to Ye Zhen’s leftover influence, but soon they ran out of options.
No face could be denied, so they had to let everyone in.
Especially the commanders of the other two divisions of the Personal Guard were all mixed up in the Imperial capital; it wasn’t good to offend anyone.
If you let one person through and refused another, you would be inviting trouble upon yourself. Eventually, they just let everyone through, which greatly annoyed Princess Changle.
However, within just half a day of Ye Zhen taking over the position of Personal Guard Captain of the Changle Princess Mansion, the news had spread across the circles of noble young lords in Luo Yi.
Even though Ye Zhen hadn’t taken any substantial actions, the number of martial artists visiting the Princess Mansion under various pretexts was reduced by almost half, greatly easing the pressure on the guards at the mansion’s gate.
The next day, Ye Zhen merely stood in front of the Changle Princess Mansion for a while and then directly appointed Gu Tieqi as the Military Sima in charge of military discipline for the Changle Princess Mansion Personal Guard Camp, rotating in a division of five hundred Personal Guards directly under Ye Zhen’s control, making the entrance of the mansion clear of obstructions.
Not only did those noble young lords vanish, but even the servants and guards they sent to gather information disappeared without a trace.
The main reason was the scandal with Marquis Tianjiang, Tian Jiao, which had blown up too much and yielded unexpectedly significant consequences, scaring those noble young lords.
Not only was Tian Jiao stripped of his title, but his family’s hereditary title was also demoted by one level.
Nowadays, Marquis Tianjiang, Tian Jiao, has become a cautionary tale among the noble families in Luo Yi, and the main instigator of all this is none other than Ye Zhen.
With the expansion of the Personal Guards at Changle Princess Mansion and the rumors of Ye Zhen taking up the position of the first captain spreading, regardless of how those noble family children reacted,
throughout Luo Yi, any prince or nobles who knew their descendants were pursuing Princess Changle immediately issued stern warnings to avoid provoking Ye Zhen.
The expansion of the Changle Princess Mansion’s Personal Guards was intriguing in itself.
It was considered favored for an ordinary princess to have a division of five hundred Personal Guards, yet Princess Changle had three divisions totaling fifteen hundred Personal Guards.
Now, with the number of Princess Changle’s Personal Guards multiplied again, reaching three thousand, it became a basic combat unit.
In Luo Yi, apart from a few princes eligible for the throne, no one else had a structured combat unit like this; Princess Changle was the first.
The implications of this made those old foxes vigilant.
Ye Zhen, who had little experience and was famous mainly for bringing down Marquis Tianjiang, Tian Jiao, taking up the role of first captain, represented the stance of the Changle Princess Mansion to some extent.
It indicated that Princess Changle was clearly unwilling to see those swarms of noble young lords.
At this moment, anyone who dared to bump into her would be incredibly foolish, and they could blame no one but themselves.
Thus, within just one day of Ye Zhen taking office, the tasks Princess Changle assigned were completed.
However, Ye Zhen’s troubles had just begun.
A captain commanding a battalion of three thousand people constituted the lowest combat unit in the Great Zhou Dynasty.
As the smallest combat unit, even a sparrow, though small, is fully equipped.
It includes a Marching Staff Officer, Military Sima, Forage Officer, Personal Guard, Scout Team, Military Law Unit, and more.
The personnel matters were easy to handle; upon consulting Master Earth, Ye Zhen had Gu Kuang, the commander of the imperial guards, select Dao Entrance Realm martial artists with clear backgrounds to fill these positions.
However, filling the dozen or so vacant positions was rather troublesome.
Under normal circumstances, after Ye Zhen’s troops were familiar with each other for some time, they could be arranged accordingly.
But this was Luo Yi, the central capital of the Imperial Guard among the Personal Guards.
According to Great Zhou’s tradition, when Personal Guard military positions are transferred outside, they can be promoted by one military rank, covering the Imperial Guard and Border Army positions.
Take Ye Zhen’s seat as Personal Guard Captain as an example; once transferred, at the very least, it would mean commanding a ten-thousand-man division of elite border troops.
Moreover, it represents that kind of elite commander of a ten-thousand-man border army.
Basically, the Personal Guard is a place for the descendants of the nobility to gild their resumes; once an officer’s experience is enough, they can jump out of this system and secure a military position good enough.
When it comes time to head to the Human-Demon Battlefield, at the very least, one could become the chief officer of an army, which not only is safer but also easier to achieve merits.
So when the news spread that Ye Zhen was taking the first captain position at the Changle Princess Mansion, people were almost breaking down Ye Zhen’s barracks door.
If it wasn’t for the butler of a prince seeking an audience one day, it was the steward of a duke the next, and some even brought letters from certain princes or nobles.
This became a great annoyance for Ye Zhen, who finally understood Princess Changle’s troubles.
To avoid trouble, Ye Zhen refused to see all these people, deciding to make some appointments only after the personnel was fully supplemented.
Although Ye Zhen had no intention of becoming a mere bodyguard leader, at least for now, he had to take care of this Personal Guard force.
At the very least, he had to ensure that orders were executed and prohibited actions were avoided.
If you recruit a group of prince and noble descendants, you can imagine how much Ye Zhen’s military orders would be implemented at a critical moment.
Ye Zhen has already planned it out. For key positions, they are all personally promoted by Ye Zhen. Positions that don’t matter much, like a Marching Staff Officer, can be given away.
According to Master Earth’s words, it will only take two days for Commander Gu Kuang to fill the troop shortfall.
So in these two days, Ye Zhen entrusted all affairs to Gu Tieqi, while he focused on his cultivation in the barracks.
But while he was cultivating, he was startled awake by the noisy shouting from outside.
"Eighth Brother, it’s not that I’m stalling, it’s not that I’m refusing to introduce you. Captain Ye is really not here, really not here!" This was the voice of Gu Tieqi with a flattering smile.
Ye Zhen’s divine sense immediately spread out like water, and the situation outside the barracks became clear at once.
Outside the barracks, a young man with some resemblance to Gu Tieqi but more robust was looking at Gu Tieqi with dissatisfaction.
Three young martial artists followed the young man, each glaring at Gu Tieqi with dissatisfaction.
"I say, Old Jiu, you’ve got some nerve now. You’ve only been the Military Sima of the Princess Mansion for a few days, and your eyes are already looking upwards? Not even helping your own direct brother?"
"If in a few days, you get lucky and become a Captain, will you even recognize the Gu family?" Gu Chunzhi pointed angrily at Gu Tieqi’s forehead as he kept advancing, forcing the smiling Gu Tieqi to keep retreating.
"Gu Tieqi, you don’t seriously think that because you’re some Military Sima, you can ignore even the words of Eighth Master Chunzhi?" said a young man behind Gu Chunzhi, fanning the flames.
’Chunzhi, Eighth Brother.’ These words reminded Ye Zhen of something instantly.
Among the younger generation of the Gu family, the eldest and Eighth Chunzhi are of the direct lineage, and among those who tarnished several dozen of Gu Tieqi’s personal maids, it was the direct bloodline’s Eighth who led it.
However, clearly, in the royal family, the hierarchy is severe. As a direct lineage disciple, Gu Chunzhi had advantages over Gu Tieqi from the side branch, both psychologically and status-wise.
As for Gu Tieqi himself, it seemed he’d become accustomed to it.
In the family, compared to Gu Chunzhi, they were just a notch lower!
Gu Tieqi had a face full of difficulty. There was no way around it; Ye Zhen gave strict orders, and he’s in charge of military discipline. If he took the lead in violating it, how would he get by afterwards?
How could he justify Ye Zhen’s trust in him?
Helplessly smiling, Gu Tieqi continuously said, "Eighth Brother, Captain Ye really isn’t here!" While smiling, Gu Tieqi transmitted through his divine soul communication to Gu Chunzhi, "Eighth Brother, it’s not that I’m not giving you face. It’s really because Captain Ye ordered....."
"Slap!"
Gu Chunzhi leapt forward, abruptly slapping Gu Tieqi across the face, catching him off guard, causing Gu Tieqi to fly backward, even splitting his lip.
"You’ve turned against me, really think your wings have hardened? Not even listening to your own direct brother’s words, really think the Gu family has no family law!" With his anger rising, Gu Chunzhi pounced forward, kicking and punching Gu Tieqi.
He showed no mercy, kicking Gu Tieqi repeatedly while he screamed miserably.
Inside the barracks, the gaze didn’t show any intention of going out.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to support Gu Tieqi; it was about Gu Tieqi’s willingness.
If Gu Tieqi dared not resist, wouldn’t it be foolish for Ye Zhen to step out and pick a fight on his behalf?
Amidst the screams, Gu Tieqi took the opportunity to embrace Gu Chunzhi’s leg, looking around at the surrounded Princess Mansion Guards, with a face full of misery, whispering plead, "Eighth Brother, give me some face, in front of so many subordinates....."
"Give you face? Just now, why didn’t you give me face....." The word ’bastard’ made Gu Tieqi’s eyes instantly bloodshot, but the blood glow merely flashed before being suppressed.
"Eighth Brother, though we’re not born of the same mother, we share the Gu family’s bloodline...."
"Bah! You cowardly thing, dare to call yourself of the Gu family bloodline?" Gu Chunzhi interrupted Gu Tieqi, cutting him off with a kick.
"Eighth Brother, don’t push me!" Gu Tieqi’s expression suddenly turned hideous.
"Push you?"
"What if I do?" Gu Chunzhi continued to punch and kick him, "Yo, you dare to resist, see if I won’t beat you to death today, you coward!"
"I’ve got inside information, Captain Ye is in the camp, you’re trying to fool me? Think you’re climbing the high branch?" Cursing, Gu Chunzhi continued kicking, his foot sounding with wind and thunder.
"Eighth Brother! Don’t push me!" Gu Tieqi suddenly changed tact, forcefully breaking away from Gu Chunzhi’s continuous hitting!
"Oh, you grew some skills!" Gu Chunzhi snorted coldly, then arrogantly swung his palm towards Gu Tieqi’s left cheek, "Let’s see what you’ll do, have the guts to hit me in the head!" Gu Chunzhi was full of confidence!
"If you dare even touch a hair of mine, it’s disrespect to your elder brother!" Gu Chunzhi’s words made Gu Tieqi’s raised hand suddenly stall.
With this hesitation, a slap landed fiercely on Gu Tieqi’s face.
As Gu Tieqi spun from the slap, he roared angrily.
"Eighth Brother, I’ve had enough, I’ve had enough!"
