’Once or twice is luck. But three times? She’s the Emperor of Europe herself!’
Leaving the operating room, Chen Yu couldn’t help but call Julian over. "Julian, you’re a great nurse. I’m planning to open a clinic in Phoenix, and I was wondering if you’d like to work for me. I can offer you a salary of 80,000 US dollars a year."
Chen Yu was planning to do the same thing he did in Orlando: open a clinic to rack up experience.
But this time, he couldn’t just open a small clinic like the one in Orlando. Chen Yu wanted to establish something larger, a clinic with its own operating room and equipment, capable of performing specialized surgeries.
So he needed doctors and nurses.
As for doctors, he could have Lexi come over.
And as for nurses, Chen Yu truly needed one who was absurdly lucky.
Julian’s heart leaped. The pay at the Mayo Clinic was better than at most hospitals, but her annual salary was still less than 50,000 US dollars.
Yet Chen Yu was offering her an annual salary of 80,000 US dollars.
She was genuinely tempted, even starting to wonder if Chen Yu was interested in her.
But when she thought about her family, Julian shook her head regretfully. "I’m sorry, Dr. Chen. Your offer is very generous, but I still can’t accept."
Then, her tone changed. "However, if I ever get divorced, I’ll come looking for you then."
Chen Yu sighed, understanding Julian’s predicament.
’Wait a minute.’
Chen Yu’s brow furrowed. ’What’s that supposed to mean, "if I get divorced, I’ll come looking for you"? Could you be a little clearer?’
After Julian walked away, Wash could no longer hold back and said softly, "Chen, you don’t actually have a thing for Julian, do you?"
Why else would you keep trying to poach her?
"No way." Chen Yu was startled and quickly explained, "I have a girlfriend."
Wash laughed and stopped teasing him. "Chen, the next time you have a surgery like this, don’t hesitate to invite me. I’ll definitely be there."
’She had really learned a lot today.’
"Of course," Chen Yu nodded.
’Wash’s freelance work was flawless, aside from the high price tag.’
「Inside the hospital room.」
Hardaway slowly regained consciousness. He turned his head and saw Chen Yu standing by the window.
"Awake?" Hearing the stirring, Chen Yu walked over to the hospital bed.
Hardaway seemed dazed for a moment before his mind cleared. He nodded, his eyes asking the question.
"Don’t worry, the surgery was a complete success," Chen Yu said with a smile.
Hardaway’s voice was a little hoarse. "I knew you wouldn’t let me down."
’And what about before?’ Chen Yu thought. ’Who was it that slammed the table and called me a fraud?’
He pulled a chair over, sat down, and glanced at Hardaway’s knee.
’The Diamond Level therapeutic effect was astonishing, but the Silver Level one wasn’t bad either.’
Chen Yu even suspected the effects were overlapping, because a number of capillaries had miraculously extended from the red zone of Hardaway’s meniscus into the torn white zone.
It wasn’t much, but as long as there was blood flow, there was hope for a complete recovery.
As for the cartilage, while the effects weren’t visible yet, he was sure the results would be just as good.
Chen Yu said, "I’ve told you before, surgery is only the first step. Whether you can make a full, healthy return to the court depends on your rehabilitation over the coming year. So, from this point forward, I need you to follow my instructions completely, just like Grant."
’Hardaway’s self-discipline was nowhere near Hill’s.’
That’s why he had to lay down the ground rules from the start.
Hardaway nodded emphatically and gave Chen Yu a thumbs-up to show he understood.
"Oh, right," Chen Yu added. "Grant called earlier to ask how you were. You can call him back when you have a chance."
’When Hill called, it hadn’t just been about Hardaway’s surgery. He’d also mentioned that his father wanted to meet me.’
’The retired football star who was also the vice president of Major League Baseball.’
’Why would he want to see me? Could it be that an MLB player is injured and needs treatment?’
’When I asked Hill, he wouldn’t say, just that we should talk about it in person.’
After checking Hardaway’s vital signs one more time, Chen Yu left.
Surgery was only the first step. Next, Chen Yu planned to use the same PRP therapy on Hardaway that he had used on Hill, which would help with his cartilage reconstruction.
Of course, glucosamine therapy was a given as well.
’He couldn’t let the therapeutic effects from his Sports Medicine skills go to waste.’
He met up with Brian, who was on his way to a press conference.
Chen Yu had attended the pre-operation press conference to briefly explain the procedure.
As for the one after the surgery, Chen Yu couldn’t be bothered and skipped it.
’What could he even say if he went? That Hardaway would make a perfect recovery? That was still ten months away.’
「The next morning.」
Chen Yu made time to go to the US Airways Center.
He and Brian had arranged yesterday for him to come in and sign the contract today.
"Chen, take a look at the contract." Brian pushed it across the table.
Chen Yu gave it a quick scan before handing it to the lawyer he had hired for the occasion.
This wasn’t a formal hiring, but more of a partnership.
In fact, many NBA teams operated this way, with both traveling team doctors and externally contracted ones.
Chen Yu’s position was somewhere in the middle; he was considered a contractor, but he would also travel with the team.
After all, he still had to set up his clinic and couldn’t possibly devote all his energy to the team.
The contract would last until the end of the season, with the option to sign a new one for the next season depending on how things went.
As for his compensation, it was prorated from an annual salary of 300,000 US dollars. With the NBA season lasting seven months, that came out to 45,000 US dollars per month.
The lawyer finished reading it carefully and nodded at Chen Yu.
Without any hesitation, Chen Yu signed his name.
"Chen, welcome aboard." It was clear Brian was in high spirits.
’Chen Yu could not only perform surgery but also understood rehabilitation. He was far more reliable than Emerson.’
"Let me show you to your office." Brian stood up, but just as he was about to leave, the phone on his desk rang.
